Overview – The University Medical Center Freiburg in Freiburg, Germany is the teaching hospital and part of the medical research unit of the University of Freiburg and home to its Faculty of Medicine. The medical center is one of the largest hospitals in Europe.

Treatments – The Department of Radiology at the Freiburg University Medical Center is equipped with the latest equipment for imaging the human body. As part of maximum care, all diagnostic examination options and all radiological-interventional therapy options are offered.
The Clinic for Nuclear Medicine at the Freiburg University Medical Center covers the entire range of modern nuclear medicine diagnostics and therapy. The diagnostics area includes their own thyroid outpatient clinic, in which they care for patients with benign and malignant thyroid diseases, as well as scintigraphic organ and functional diagnostics , which are used in particular to examine the skeleton, lungs, brain, myocardium, kidneys and sentinel lymph nodes. We also perform PET / CT diagnostics with over 3,000 examinations per year.
Radiotherapy – Radiation therapy, also known as radiation oncology, radiotherapy or radiation medicine, deals with the medical application of ionizing radiation. Its aim is to cure diseases – especially malignant, but also benign tumors -, to delay their progression or to alleviate symptoms.
In addition to surgery and drug treatment, radiation therapy plays an important role in the treatment of cancer. It can be used as the sole remedy for a tumor or performed before, during or after an operation. There is also the option of combining radiation therapy with anti-tumor drugs.
During chemotherapy or immunotherapy, radiation-sensitizing substances can be administered that make the tumor tissue even more sensitive to radiation. In addition, radiation-protective substances can be applied to protect healthy tissue better. Which treatment is the right one depends on the individual case and is determined in an individual treatment concept.
The objective of the Department of Hematology, Oncology, and Stem-Cell Transplantation, at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, is the diagnostics and treatment of patients with cancer in accordance with world standards and the most up-to-date methods. Their goal is to cure as many patients as possible and to improve their quality of life. Over 90 doctors and scientists work in our department with more than 8,600 people undergoing in-patient treatment each year.
Chemotherapy, hormonotherapy, immunotherapy, autologous and allogenic transplantation of bone marrow and stem cells are the most commonly used treatment methods here. All of these mentioned methods can be combined with each other. They cooperate with different departments at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg and therefore offer a basis for radiological or surgical intervention. Numerous methods, such as pain therapy, nutrition or diet therapy, physiotherapy and psychological counselling, are also used.
They strive to apply all of the most recent and effective treatment methods to achieve this. They also simultaneously conduct further clinical research for the development of new methods that help cure more and more cancer patients or delay the progression of this disease for a long time.
